How Long to Get an Answer? You write in to ask Dr. Julia a question and you wait... and you wait. "What in the world takes this chicken so long to answer my question?" you ask. You must remember, Dr. Julia's Advice Column gets thousands of letters. I suppose I should clarify that statement. Assuming that there are 26 letters in the alphabet and 4.5 letters in the average word with the average question containing 78 words, we're looking at around 351 letters per question. Think about this for a second (but no more than a second or you may figure it out). We only need to receive 3 questions before we've got ourselves a thousand letters to answer! Clearly, it is tough to keep up. After all, it is only one chicken. We try our best to give you an appropriate, accompanying photo, good, solid advice, and a chuckle, but these things take time, especially when you're dealing with thousands of letters. So, what I'm trying to say is, if you need some advice...

I thought that I had better tell everybody where I have been the past couple of weeks. In short... Spring Cleaning! Now, for me, spring cleaning is a must. We heat our house with wood stoves and that means soot and ash absolutely everywhere. Last year I waited too long to spring clean and was sweating to death in 90 degree temperatures while scrubbing walls, windows, ceiling fans etc. Well, not this year. Started nice and early this time. One problem. It's been in the 30's some nights and a bit on the chilly side in the house. No one dares to ask for a fire to be started... not after my husband tried the third day into my cleaning spree. I can only assume that the veins in my neck and my bulging eyes were heat enough, and it seems to have kept everyone warm since. Although it's freezing in the house, outside it is just the right temperature for weeds. Basically, we're looking at 11 acres of weeds. So far, I would say that I have about 10 square foot of that under control. Over the winter, X the goat ate every single one of the horses' tails... as well as our blueberry plants. Both the plants and tails are mere nubs as we speak. I have high hopes for the blueberries. Couple of Horses Eating Hay Notice the total lack of tail. Um... wait, I think that's my son. Maybe it's time for lunch. Oh well, there's lots of work to do, and as the saying goes, "Many hands lighten the load". Kids Can Weed Too I simply have the children put all of the weeds into a bucket for easy disposal. One thing about spring cleaning around here is that everyone has their own ideas on what needs to be done. Some Think We Should Plant Seed Some Think We Should Mow Some Think It's Too Nice Out To Work Anyway, there's a brief update for you. You'll be happy to know that I've written out my spring schedule (I'm famous for my schedules) and will be contacting Dr. Julia this week to see how she fares. Right now, I am going to read my own article for Busy Moms to see if I can take my own advice!
