Dream of sparrows

by Nisha
(Richmond, Va, USA)

Dear Dr. Julia,

I had a dream of two sparrows last night... one was killed and the other I couldn't catch.

In waking life, my mom always told us if a bird entered the house that it denotes the death of someone we know. So, when we saw these birds in our home in my dream, we were terrified and screaming.

The weird thing about this dream is the bird that was killed was killed by my stepfather with a knife, and my 9 month old baby boy was playing on the floor sitting right next to this dying bird.

Both my mom and my stepfather were trying to keep
me from seeing my little boy on the floor, but I peeped around them, and the more I saw it the more it looked like sorcery or witchcraft - huh?

I know this makes no sense, but the feeling that I got from the dream was so real, like it meant something.

Could you help me to interpret this dream?

Thank you,
Nisha

Dear Nisha,

I rarely go against a mother's words, but this time I simply have no choice.

I have had countless birds in both my office and my home without incident. Oh, they may have made a little mess here and there or walked into my sliding glass door, but I can assure you, no one ever died.

It sounds to me that you are having a trust issue concerning your stepfather. You would rather not have your son around him without your watchful eye.

In your dream your mother was in cahoots with your stepfather, signifying that you think she would hide the truth in order to protect him.

You must remember, this is only a dream. You have to be the one that decides whether or not your fears and/or mistrusts are justified.

Common sense has to be the rule.

And inform your mother for me that her bird adage is all wrong. I can't quite remember it, but it has something to do with two birds and one stone.

Regards,
Dr. Julia
