Oddly Enough...

Gary Larson cartoon (1984)

Gary Larson cartoon (1984)

Gary Larson cartoon (1984) by Lee Lorenz, a 74-year-old former art editor of The New Yorker

After I posted Prognosis Negative and explained how I won't look at the Far Side cartoons, I stumble upon this little article that shows two almost identical cartoons by two different artists.

2007 New Yorker cartoon similar to 1984 Far Side cartoon - (I placed the cartoons above so that you may see them here).

Evidently, Lorenz is catching some slack for copying Larson.

There is nothing new under the sun, the Bible says. I always think to myself, This is so obvious. Someone else has had to have said or done this already!

This is the VERY reason I stay away from other cartoonists (or even writers). I simply don't want any type of influence... regardless of how subliminal it may be.

Truly though, I don't stress myself out over originality. If someone has already done it, I'm sure that there is at least a slight difference... such as, mine is funnier or something like that :)

Anyway, I sure hope no stickin' pigeons show up in Dr. Julia's office!

The secret is to steal from multiple sources, mix 'em together and call it you "own". Then in some interview, admit... "oh yea I was influenced by such and such as well as such and such......"

You're Wrong... again
by: Lora (admin)

I don't see how you could think that this Lorenz guy was "stealing" from Larson - or at least, be so quick to think he had.

I'm pretty sure that the thought of "pigeons devouring people" has been around ever since park benches were placed in Central Park... and that was long before 1984!

Jokes are usually funny because we can relate to them in one way or another. The fact that we relate so well proves that it has crossed our mind.

Take for instance jokes and/or sitcoms that poke fun at married life. The situations are almost all the same - just a different spin here and there.

Such as... husbands are always wrong. Tons of jokes on this subject. Why? Because it's true and we all can relate to it.

In order to ease women's pain and make it "funny", it's up to the comedian or cartoonist to take this simple truth and exaggerate it. Of course, in our case, exaggeration isn't really necessary.

Of course, I agree. Going up against you even without Dr. J is a loosing proposition. I stand corrected.

I thought you stood flatfooted.
That was far too easy.
