You Can't Compare Apples and Oranges

"You can't compare apples and oranges" is not the same as saying you can't compare apples to oranges.

We can compare an apple to an orange or a banana or a grape. Apples are bigger than grapes. Apples aren't as easy to peel as bananas. Apples aren't as round as oranges. What we can't do is base our judgment of an apple on the qualities of the grape!

Saying we don't like apples because they're not as yellow as bananas is not a fair comparison.

Saying you don't like cats because you can't take them for rides in the car like you can a dog isn't fair either. My cat wanted that pointed out.
